Go Green: 7Strand Green Machine

What’s the all-time favorite offshore lure of anglers all over the coast? The Green Machine is a stand-by that no one leaves the dock without. And experienced offshore anglers know that this is one of the most reliable, effective lures in the tacklebox. Test it? Heck—I don’t even leave the dock for an offshore run without at least half a dozen in stock. It should be placed in every offshore spread (though it performs best when positioned 60’ or more back behind the boat because they aren’t the best close-in lures,) and when albacore are in town, there is no better lure or bait, period. In fact, when albacore are your main target, try running a spread of Green Machines only and you’ll be amazed at the results: double, triple, even quad hook-ups.

Green Machine Tip: if you buy the Green Machine pre-rigged it comes with a heavy leader and low action. Unless you’re trolling for real monsters with cannon-sized gear, buy the lure plain and rig it with 80-lb. test, to maximize its action. Run it side-by-side with a pre-rigged model, and you’ll notice that the one on light leader has twice as much swimming and darting action.

Bonus Green Machine Tip: Rig it with a tandem-hook rig, with the hook points facing in opposing directions, and you won’t miss many strikes.

Price: about $15 un-rigged, and $25 rigged.

The Highs: One of the best offshore producers, ever. No substitute, when longfin albacore are around.

The Lows: Plastic head may chip when an angry fish swings it into a fiberglass gunwale.

Who Wants It: Every offshore angler, period.

Both yellowfin and albacore are suckers for the Green Machine.
