Spread ‘Em: Abaco Big Eye Killa Spreader Bar

You want to target bigeye or bluefin tunas? Then you want a spreader bar with large baits, hefty construction, and a bridled spreader bar. That’s the idea behind Abaco’s Big Eye Killa.

This is one whopper of a spreader bar, sporting 11 15” winged squid, run from a 36” bar. The bridled rigging means it has the stamina to hold up to exceptionally large fish, and I’ve found that bridled bars like this tend to do less cart-wheeling and flipping. The Big Eye Killa is available in two color patterns, “rasta” (multicolored) and pink. In either pattern this bar serves a great double-purpose: it’s also a de-facto marlin teaser. Run close in off the short rigger line, it reliably raises billfish. Our SOP is to keep a pitch bait handy and when a bill appears by the spreader, one guy drops back the pitch bait while another cranks away the bar—usually, it works like a charm.

Price: $170

High Points: A bear of a bar, for B-I-G fish.

Low Points: Only two color patterns available?

Who Wants It: The canyon commando in search of B-I-G tunas.
