Offshore Treat: Abaco Missile

The coolest thing about Abaco Big Game Tackle’s new Missile lure? They come in about a gazillion different colors and patterns. Plus, the translucent heads have a reflective interior that throw sunlight off in all directions. So run a spread of these behind the boat, and you’ll have every light shade in the spectrum covered. These three-ounce lures are made with hard hand-poured heads skirted by two layers of soft plastic. They’re a foot long and can be rigged with ballyhoo and trolled at slower speeds, but I think they offered the best action rigged alone And moving at a faster clip—at an eight-mph troll they look lively, with a swimming action that’s similar to that of a Green Machine or a Tuna Clone, darting from side-to-side. That makes them perfect for prospecting large areas of the ocean, when you want to keep your speed up but still have a shot at hooking into tuna, billfish, wahoo, and mahi. I also found that I could keep that action just by rigging ‘em up with lighter leaders. 60-lb. test lets them dance through the water, even at slow speeds, and 100-lb. test provides plenty of motion. Heavier stuff… well, you know.

If you want to get that rainbow in the water but you also want diversity in your spread (and I know I do) you can also opt for a Missile daisy chain, which gets more baits in the water on a single line. Extra Bonus: Abaco can custom-make pre-rigs to your specifications.
