Go Low: Inshore Extreme Low Profile Baitcasting Reel

With a hefty 20-knot wind dead out of the southwest, I didn’t have ideal weather for casting an un-weighted live bait. My Offshore Angler Inshore Extreme low-profile baitcasting reel was up to the challenge, however. By holding the rod tip down and flicking the bait underhanded, a 60’ heave was no problem.

After tuning down the 6-pin centrifugal casting brake it was easy to get another 20’ out of my cast. Coming tight on a hefty bluefish my hook-set was instantaneous with the no play anti-reverse. On powerful runs the drag felt smooth and thanks to six ball-bearings, the retrieve was even smoother. A one-piece machined aluminum frame and spool, heavy-duty stainless-steel gearing, and a light black coating on the metal hinted at saltwater longevity. You like to fish with superbraids, but worry about the damage they can do to a reel? No problem, with the Extreme—a titanium coated line guide prevents wear to both the guide and your line. The 6.3:1 gear ratio provides 28” of retrieve per handle turn—a nice feature for those super long casts.

Price: $140

The Highs: Casts far, retrieves smoothly.

The Lows: Line capacity isn’t huge, at 145-yards of 14-lb. test.

Who Wants It: Saltwater anglers who like low profile reels that don’t cost an arm and a leg.
