Bored Excitement: Bloody Point Planer Boards

For certain fisheries, especially the trophy striper season on Chesapeake Bay, planer boards have become a must-have item. Riding 150’ or more off to either side of the boat, these boards let you expand your spread to a dozen or more lines, and get them out from under your propwash. Experienced board users can tell you, even with an equal number of lines pulled from the transom and from the boards, the board lines will out-fish the boat lines two to one because boat-shy fish aren’t affected by planer boards.

Unfortunately, there aren’t many reliable planer board manufacturers out there. Those that do exist (like Cannon’s planer boards) are usually two-board plastic models that can’t handle open water use. You need solid wood, and you need triple-plank planers, if you want to be able to fish in big seas. Bloody Point has come out with a set of wood planer boards, which are made to handle heavy seas and big fish.

These boards are made out of yellow pine, with 316-grade stainless-steel bolts and locking nuts. They’re two feet wide, just under three feet long, and over nine inches deep. These beefy boards won’t flip and dive when the bay gets choppy, and they’ll track straight. I also liked that they come pre-rigged with three foot tall flags, so you can keep an eye on them easily while you troll.

Price: $200/pair.

The Highs: Big, beefy boards that are made for big water use.

The Lows: Have fun trying to stow these things.

Who Wants It: Trollers who like 12+ line spreads.
