Churn it Up: The Chum Churn

I’m a die-hard chum lover—nothing smells better to me at zero-dark-early then a tub full of ground menhaden. So I was psyched to check out the Chum Churn, a chumming device that promised to turn my freshly netted bunker into a slurry of fish goo—yippie!

I tested the Chum Churn while chumming for stripers, and was impressed by how well it’s built. It consists of a PVC body, a spring-loaded aluminum handle, and some seriously wicked blades. You drop your fish into the top, screw it shut, and yank the handle up and down to swing the blades and chop fish into bits. It can handle hard to cut, boney fish, and managed to turn white perch into puree in no time, much less bunker. The bottom section is held on with a nut that you have to keep an eye on. Let it get jiggled loose, and the body of the unit can slip away and sink into the deep. But as long as you check it regularly, the Chum Churn does its job with vigor—a few yanks on the handle sends out a cloud of fish bits that attract predators to your hook. Even the skulls of the fish didn’t jam the unit, and a freshwater rinse at the end of the day was all it took to keep the blades in good shape.

Price: Just under $200.

The Highs: Grinds fish to a pulp with aplomb.

The Lows: Watch the nut and make sure it’s tight, or you could lose part of the unit.

Who Wants It: Chum lovers who catch their own bait and don’t want to spend all day grinding it.
