Wishing You Good Luke: Lucanus Jigs
When I dropped one of Shimano’s Lucanus jigs on a wreck off the coast of Ocean City, in chilly 58-degree water, the sea bass must have gone insane—as bizarre as these things look the fish still wanted to eat them. These things look sort of like an octopus and sort of like a squid-beetle creature, and I can’t imagine what the fish think they look like. But since they work, I say to heck with match the hatch. Added bonus: these things don’t seem to snag on the wreckage as often as most jigs do, and I only lost a couple during an entire day of wreck fishing.
The Lucanus is retrieved with a slow motion followed by a freefall, which is supposed to get fish to bite thanks to the wobbling design and the tempting motion of a silicon skirt. The whole idea behind them is to activate slow-moving fish in cool waters, and experience proves the theory My only complaint is cost—at $15 to $18 per jig, bite-offs can make a day of fishing very expensive. Still, since they work…
Price: $15 - $18
The Highs: Activate lethargic fish in cool waters.
The Lows: Bite offs will cost you.
Who Wants It: Anglers after somewhat cold, lethargic wreck fish.

| Yeah, it looks ugly. But if it catches fish, who cares? |
