Squid Fest: Offshore Innovations Shell Squid Spreader
In case you can’t guess it from the picture, Scotty has a new favorite lure: Offshore Innovations Shell Squid spreader bar. This yellowfin was one of four taken that day, and three of them attacked the bar instead of the ballyhoo and other offerings in the spread. The rainbow color seemed to be a key factor; in fact, this was a hot color all season for yellowfin, on both spreaders and other lures.
The Offshore Innovations Shell Squid spreader bar consists of 14 nine-inch squid shells, rigged on a 36” bar. The mono is 200-lb. test Momoi, and the hook-bait is rigged with an 8/0 Mustad. The bar itself is a Titanium Aussie bar, which seems to hold its shape very well. It’s also a light bar, and running the spreader from a short rigger line we were able to keep the rig about 50’ behind the boat with the bar still elevated out of the water—remember, the most effective way to run spreaders is with the bar out, not dragging through, the water, and you need a light but strong bar to make it happen. Other color patterns are available including pink, green, black/clear, shrimp, green/yellow, and black. But if Scotty’s onboard, you’ll be in for a fight if you start without a rainbow in the water.
