Pflueger Contender: Bless You
Did you just sneeze, or ask about that Contender reel? Either way, let’s talk Pflueger—this company has been building reels since 1881. But the Contender G15 is all-new compared to grad-dad’s Pflueger. This conventional star-drag level-winder that features four ball bearings, a graphite frame and corrosion-resistant anodized aluminum spool, and a 4.3:1 gear ratio—perfect for medium-duty trolling for fish like stripers, blues, and mackerel.
When I tried pulling an umbrella rig for spring stripers on this reel I found the drag and freespool are smooth. Maybe not as smooth as reels that cost five times as much, but considering the cost it’s certainly up to par. The Contender G15 holds 290 yards of 17-lb. test, and comes with a rod clamp. The frame is graphite and the spool is anodized aluminum, but this is still a chunky reel for its class at 18.3-ounces. It’s no Cadillac, but considering the price point, the Contender is a good deal.
Price: $70
The Highs: Solid, smooth, and dependable.
The Lows: Some wiggle in the handle.
