P-Line Halo: Can You See It Now?
We have three days, two boats, and acre after acre of prime Port Aransas water—chock full of redfish and speckled trout—all around us. Both spinning and baitcasting rigs are ready to rock ‘n roll, there are loads of jigs and tails in the tackleboxes, and every reel is loaded with fresh P-line so we can test out their Halo co-fluoride fluorocarbon lines.
Halo is one of the few lines that focuses on fluorocarbon use on the main line instead of just using it in the traditional means, as a leader. (Usually, this is a simple matter of expense—fluorocarbon ain’t cheap.) But, it’s not a traditional fluoro; this is a “co-fluoride” line that blends pure fluorocarbon crystals, in an effort to attain the maximum combination of strength, flexibility, and invisibility. I give 'em an "A" for strength and invisibility, but Halo still feels stiffer then the average "soft" monofilament in my hands. The blend also gives this line a fast sink rate. It’s available in mist-green, in four to 20 pound test, in 200 yard single-fill spools.
Fishing with these line proved that, like other P-line I’ve used, the quality level is extremely high. Knot strength, abrasion-resistance, castability, and sensitivity proved good in all cases. There’s no denying that fluorocarbon lines have an invisibility advantage, but remember that they also cost a heck of a lot more. And compared to braid, this line still seems stretchy. Is all-fluoro line really necessary? That’s a debate for you and your fishing buddy… or maybe you and your wallet. If you always tie on a fluoro leader, I'd say using an all-fluoro line like this one is overkill. But if not, Halo should be on your short list.
Price: $17 - $25
The Highs: Stiffer than traditional mono, fast sink, good knot strength, and invisible to the fish.
The Lows: More$$ and stiffer than traditional mono. (Is it a pro, or a con? Depends on how you’re fishing!)
Who Wants It: Fluorocarbon lovers who want the invisible stuff for a main line, not just leader.
