Count Me In: Shakespeare AR15GRLC Line Counter

If you want your trolling baits to run at a specific depth, you need to know exactly how much line is over the side. No problem, if you’re using Shakespeare’s AR15GRLC Line Counter. This saltwater-grade, level-wind conventional reel has a built-in line counter which goes up to 999’. It holds 300 yards of 14-lb. test, has a 4.2:1 gear ratio, and weighs in at 18-ounces. The reel’s weight is kept light by using a graphite frame, while saltwater longevity is ensured by using a single stainless-steel ball bearing, a stainless-steel pinion, and stainless-steel main gear.

Considering that this reel goes for about $50 you can’t expect this to be the smoothest in the world, and in freespool you’ll notice a difference between this and more advanced reels. That said, when you’re looking for a trolling reel freespool isn’t the most important feature anyway. The clicker makes for a loud alarm, the star drag is smooth and easily adjusted, and the handle fits well in your palm as you crank back those feisty fighters. And, the AR15GRLC Line Counter has an advantage over some competing linecounting reels: it has a spool tension adjustment knob, and can be cast as well as trolled. Can be—but you have to remember, that’s not really this reel’s mission. Bottom line: the AR15GRLC is a good choice for trollers who plan to run their baits exactly where they choose with no guesswork, every time they fish. It’s not exactly the Porche of trolling reels, but it carries a Chevy price tag, too, as well as workhorse reliability

Price: $50

High Points: Tells you how much line you have out, for consistent trolling spreads.

Low Points: It’s a bit clunky, and the drag isn’t the smoothest in the world.

Who Wants It: Bay trollers who need to know how much line they have out, are hunting for mid-sized species like stripers and Spanish mackerel, and watch their budget closely.
