There might not be another baitcaster that can match the simple elegance of Shimano’s Calcuttas. Its new 200B model holds to this standard with its gold cold-forged aluminum frame. The super stopper anti-reverse provides solid hook sets, a dartainium drag proves smooth through a wide range of settings, and the stainless steel bearings are treated to resist corrosion.
With Shimano’s variable brake system that relies on centrifugal force rather than magnets, I had to be careful not to hit the trees on the far shoreline when casting. Reeling fast was no problem with the 6.0:1 retrieve, and it gave me plenty of crank to set up on a hefty fish when my plug drew a strike. The Calcutta is more then elegant – it’s a classic.
