The Tyrnos TYR 30II is just like the single-speed Tyrnos 30, but with low gear, adding a 2.5:1 ratio retrieve to the 30’s 5:1 ratio. It’ll hold 600 yards of 30-lb. test, and has oversized gears that will survive the saltwater environment for years. Like the other reels in the Tyrnos series the open crossbar design is about half the width across the middle, so there’s plenty of room to slide in your thumb if you want to apply “manual” drag. This ability also makes it possible to cast with the reel.
One of my favorite features is the ratcheted lever drag, which won’t get knocked out of place by accident. The oversized handle feels great in your palm, and the clicker button sits low and flush in the side plate. That means no accidental bumpings, although it does take more effort to turn on and take off. Now consider the cost—about $400, which is not expensive for a two-speed, mid-sized bluewater reel. Longevity? After two seasons of salty dousings and screaming tuna runs, it remains corrosion-free and in tip-top shape.
Price: $400.
The Highs: The Tyrnos line has proven it’s mettle; these reels take a licking, and keep on ticking.
The Lows: I found the clicker tough to turn on and off.
Who Wants It: Anglers who want dependability and two speeds in a middle-weight reel, that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.
