WaveSpin’s DH3000: Jump on a Waverunner
Tangles are just a part of fishing, but… do they have to be? WaveSpin says their new series of spinning reels is designed to answer “no.” The DH3000, a spinner with a 5.2:1 ratio rated for six to 10-lb. test; the DH4000, with a 4.9:1 ratio, for eight to 12-lb. test; and the DH5000, with a 4.9:1 ratio, for 10 to 14-lb. test, feature a wave formed into the rim of the spool. This causes line to skip from peak to peak, pulling free or pushing down loops as you cast and retrieve—or so WaveSpin claims.
To find out if it was true I spooled a DH3000 with 12-pound line and (oh, darn) went fishing. The first thing I noticed was the reel’s strange appearance—the “waves” look more like teeth at first glance. After casting jigs to rip-rap for schoolies stripers all day I felt that the claim is true: the wave-teeth really do help get rid of loops and tangles. Unfortunately, the “waves” in the spool also grab the line and cut casting distance sometimes. It’s not a fatal flaw, but a trade-off. Figure you’ll cut down on knots and tangles by 50 or 60 percent, and on one out of every 10 or so casts (it usually happened when I wasn’t paying good attention and casted by rote) your distance will be cut by a third. Is it a worthy trade? That’s your call, but on my boat, this rig stays stowed when we're casting and comes out for jigging or chumming, only.
Price: $80 - $110
