Zebco Quantum Aruba PT 30S: Heavy Metal

We don’t usually think of Zebco as making big game reels, but the Quantum Aruba series has been a serious effort to break into the bluewater market. I tested out a 30 PTs, which holds 750-yards of 30-lb. test, has 3.2:1/1.7:1 gear ratios, and can apply a whopping 60-lbs of drag in the full position.

It took some tugging to work the drag and get it running smoothly—the dual carbon drag system was jerky out of the box, and needed a few runs to break in. After it had smoothed out, though, the drag functioned well. The reel’s spool is supported by three nitrogen-alloy PT bearings, which make it feel silky smooth whether line’s running out or (hopefully) being cranked in. The Aruba’s built with stainless-steel gears and the frame is constructed of CNC-milled billet aluminum, so it feels beefy in your hands and after two seasons of use and abuse it shows no signs of deterioration, whatsoever. The reel seat clamp’s safety loop attachment sticks out the back, instead of out the side as on most other reels, and it caught my hand sometimes as I slid it up or down the rod. Fortunately, this piece can be swapped out without a problem.

The Aruba disassembles easily without any tools, thanks to a hand-screw that releases the side plate, so servicing it at sea will be a snap. Just be careful not to loosen it while attempting to adjust the drag; it fooled me more then once. Similarly, the drag setting, lever, and clicker are all easy to grasp and maneuver.

Price on this reel is worth noting, too. It MSRP’s for over $500, but you can find it for less on the web. If you’re outfitting your boat with a new set of reels you’ll essentially be able to get a set of five Arubas for the price of four standard gold rigs.

Price: $550

The Highs: Built tough, with no signs of corrosion or part failures after significant use. Tool-free disassembly.

The Lows: Drag was sticky out of the box; accidental disassembly during use is possible (and occurred during testing.)

Who Wants It: Quantum fans looking for a full set of bluewater outfits that have longevity.

The Aruba is finicky, but tough.
