Catching Z’s: Z-Wing
When fish like wahoo or bluefin tuna are running deep, it can be tough to get them to bite. Planers and downriggers are the usual answer, but they’re tough to use at offshore trolling speeds. Another option I’ve been trying for the past season is the Z-Wing planer, and it’s turned out to be a product worth considering for your offshore spread.
Thanks to design and hydrodynamics, these units create a lot of downward force. They track straight, and although they work well with downriggers I’ve found it easiest to run them off a cleat. Capable of running at a mere 16-degree angle, the Z-wing can dive as deep as 50’; exact depth will depend on how much line you let out, and how fast you’re going. I rigged mine with 75’ of 300-pound test mono, and regularly get baits 25’ and deeper. Two models are available, the 500 for high-speed trolling and the 250 for all speeds. After a season of using a Z-Wing I felt it was less hassle than a planer or downrigger, and now I carry one along on every trip.
Price: $55
The Highs: Get a bait deep with minimal hassle.
The Lows: Can’t be retrieved while the boat is underway, unless you’re Hercules.
Who Wants It: Offshore anglers who need to get lines deep and are tired of hassling with planer rods or downriggers.
